Novartis Presented Becoming Christopher at 2007 NACFC: A Unique Educational Event for CF Care Teams.
Every day, CF Care Teams and caregivers provide the best care possible for people living with CF, whether through medical, emotional or other support. And every year, we come together at the North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference (NACFC) to share the latest information and medical advances in cystic fibrosis research and care.
Premiering at NACFC in 2007, Becoming Christopher was presented as a one-act play sponsored by Novartis that poignantly captured the life of an individual living with CF. Award-winning playwright Michael Slade told the story of Christopher, a young man living with CF as he stepped into adulthood. The story shared his experiences during his transition as he claimed his independence and brought to life the physical and emotional challenges, opportunities, and truths that he, his medical team, his parents and close friends encounter on the journey.
Novartis encouraged CF care teams to participate in this unique educational event. Following the play, a "talk back" panel of four leading experts in the CF community commented on the issues that were brought to life in the play by Christopher and his care team. This interactive discussion between our panelists and audience members provided a forum for candid conversation, valuable insight, and commentary on how CF care teams can work together to successfully transition CF patients from pediatric to adult care settings.
Audience reaction to the play Becoming Christopher was so overwhelmingly positive that Novartis produced a video adaptation and a film sequel, Christopher Chronicles. Both films are available at no cost through CF Centers across the country.
